Fears of escalation in Russia's war on Ukraine are intensifying along NATO's eastern flank, prompting Poland to scramble its fighter jets during overnight Russian attacks that struck western Ukraine near the Polish border. Poland's armed forces confirmed on Friday that fighter jets were deployed, though no violations of Polish airspace were recorded. This incident marks the latest alert as Poland and other NATO eastern flank nations grow increasingly concerned about the risk of escalation, particularly as Russia appears to be accelerating its testing of regional defenses.

Following the attacks, which heavily impacted Ukraine's Volyn region and left 370,000 people without electricity, Bulgaria's Defence Minister announced on Friday that Sofia has requested assistance from NATO to strengthen its defenses. The strikes in Volyn injured two people, according to Governor Roman Romaniuk. Meanwhile, in eastern Ukraine's Kharkiv, a drone attack resulted in three fatalities and five injuries, as reported by the regional governor. In central Ukraine, strikes on an apartment block in Uman injured a similar number, police stated. The private power company DTEK announced emergency power cuts in Kyiv due to ongoing strikes.

In Russia, officials reported that air defenses intercepted a Ukrainian drone attack targeting a heating plant in the Vladimir region. Ukraine has achieved notable success in targeting Russia's energy infrastructure, particularly oil refineries, a strategy that has drawn criticism from United States President Donald Trump, who has attributed rising global oil prices to Ukraine's actions. Russia claimed to have shot down 644 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 94 directed towards Moscow. Al Jazeera's Yulia Shapovalova reported from Moscow that operations were suspended at the capital's four airports and St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport. Additionally, Ukrainian attacks in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine resulted in two deaths, according to the Russian-installed governor.

Concerns regarding Russian activity near NATO territory have escalated since the summer, with Romania, Moldova, Poland, and the Baltic states reporting numerous drone intrusions into their airspace and waters. This activity has become increasingly bellicose, with drones striking at least seven cargo ships in Romanian and Bulgarian territorial waters in the Black Sea in recent weeks, causing two deaths and leaving at least 25 individuals missing. Two ships were hit off Romania's coast this week, and an incident involving a commercial vessel that sank off Bulgaria's coast on Tuesday led Sofia to summon Russia's ambassador. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated on Friday that while evidence pointed to Russia, his government lacked definitive proof.

Subsequently, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov informed reporters that Bulgaria has formally requested NATO to deploy combat aircraft and anti-drone systems to bolster its defenses. "We have sent letters and a request to the NATO Secretary General and the Supreme Allied Commander, urging them to strengthen our capabilities, which also means deploying additional forces on our territory. We are awaiting their decision," Stoyanov said. NATO had not immediately responded to a request for comment, according to Reuters. Stoyanov indicated plans to meet with his Romanian and Turkish counterparts soon to discuss coordinated action and a unified approach to the Black Sea situation. Bulgaria, which has proposed a moratorium on attacks against civilian ships in the Black Sea, also anticipates joining a NATO anti-drone initiative by the end of October.
