A swift-moving wildfire in Orange County, Southern California, has destroyed several coastal properties and triggered extensive evacuation orders. The Orange County Fire Authority reported on Friday that the Norte Fire had consumed approximately 188 hectares (465 acres), with the state’s Cal Fire agency estimating the burn area to be around 231 hectares (570 acres) by evening. At least six homes have been confirmed damaged or destroyed in the San Juan Capistrano area. Firefighters are engaged in an aggressive ground and air assault on the blaze, with authorities urging the public to stay clear of the affected region. Unseasonably high temperatures and low humidity are exacerbating the fire's rapid spread, according to AFP news agency.
The Norte Fire originated in the coastal city of San Clemente on Friday and subsequently moved into San Juan Capistrano. By evening, approximately 6,000 homes and 16,000 residents were under mandatory evacuation orders. Evacuation shelters have been established in both cities, while helicopters work to combat the flames. The fire is being fueled by Santa Ana winds, which are intense, warm gusts blowing from the southwestern US interior towards the California coast. These winds typically occur in autumn when Southern California's vegetation is at its driest following a prolonged, rainless summer, as noted by The Weather Channel. Forecasters indicated wind speeds ranging from 55km/h to 90km/h (35mph to 55mph) in coastal zones, with the strongest gusts anticipated through Friday. The high heat and low humidity conditions contributing to the fire's growth are expected to persist until Saturday night.
In Los Angeles County, tens of thousands of residents experienced power outages as authorities worked to mitigate the risk of electrical sparks from the strong wind gusts. Meanwhile, California firefighters are also contending with other blazes, including the Bryson Fire, which ignited on the outskirts of the Malibu beach community in Los Angeles County on Thursday. As of Friday, the Bryson Fire had burned approximately 59 hectares (147 acres) and was 17 percent contained, according to Cal Fire. The Henderson Fire in San Diego County, which impacted Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and led to freeway closures, had burned 842 hectares (2,080 acres) and was 20 percent contained by Friday, Cal Fire reported.
