Three Mexican men have been handed down sentences of over 158 years each for the murders of two Australian brothers and their American companion, who were on a surf trip along Mexico’s Baja California coast. The sentencing took place on Friday in the coastal city of Ensenada, Baja California state.

The judge ruled that Jesus Gerardo Garcia, known as “El Kekas”, along with Irineo Francisco “N” and Angel Jesus “N”, will each serve 158 years and nine months in prison. They were convicted of homicide, robbery with violence, and vehicle theft with violence.

The convictions came a week after the men were found guilty of murdering Australian brothers Callum Robinson, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, and their 30-year-old American friend, Jack Carter Rhoad. The tragic case has cast a shadow over Mexico’s tourism industry, highlighting the dangers that foreign visitors can encounter.

The Baja California State Attorney General’s Office had initially sought an “exemplary sentence” of 210 years for each defendant. Antonio Otanez, president of the Baja California surfers’ association, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating that “justice has been served.” Otanez also noted that the killings had led to a “major drop” in tourism, particularly among surfers, visiting the region renowned for its stunning beaches.

The Robinson brothers and Rhoad had traveled to Mexico in late April 2024, intending to surf at Punta San Jose, near Ensenada. They camped on the beach on the night of April 27, 2024. Following their disappearance, a multi-day search was initiated by authorities, with assistance from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The bodies were discovered on May 3, buried in a well over 15 meters deep, with all victims having sustained gunshot wounds to the head. Last week, Martin Robinson, the father of the Australian brothers, commented that the “guilty verdict is a significant moment in our long and painful journey to seek justice for our beautiful sons, Callum and Jake, and their friend Carter Rhoad, whose lives were so cruelly taken from them in 2024.”
