Pedro Neto's impressive first Premier League brace propelled Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over Everton, handing the Toffees their first defeat of the season at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The win, however, was marred by a serious head injury sustained by Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
Neto opened the scoring just after the half-time whistle and sealed the three points in the eleventh added minute, a period extended due to the lengthy treatment required for Martinez. The Argentinian international was involved in a severe head collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and was subsequently taken to hospital. Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso confirmed, "As far as I know he left the stadium conscious. Right now he’s in the hospital doing the precautionary tests, so let’s see."
This away victory marks Chelsea's first of the season and lifts them above Everton into the top four. It also signifies their first clean sheet in 23 Premier League games. "We needed one of these wins away. We have played very professional, very serious, looking solid. It is a very good win," Alonso commented. "We need to get many more clean sheets for the rest of the league games but for sure the first one of the season feels good and now we need to keep going this way."
The match, which had a fiery temperament, saw its first yellow card when Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong committed a strong tackle on Josh Acheampong. This challenge seemed to ignite the home crowd and spurred Everton into their most dominant spell of the game. Thierno Barry missed a headed opportunity from a Jack Grealish cross, directing it too close to Martinez. Chelsea, known for their quick starts under Alonso, had their first real threat four minutes before half-time when Moises Caicedo struck the crossbar from a well-executed corner.
Everton expressed frustration when Morgan Rogers avoided a second booking just before the break following a forceful clash with England teammate James Garner. This proved to be a pivotal moment as Chelsea came out strong in the second half. Jorrel Hato made his way to the byline and delivered a low cross that found Neto, who controlled the ball before firing past Jordan Pickford.
Chelsea had not recorded a Premier League clean sheet since January, but their defense was rarely tested by an Everton side lacking forward options, especially after Martinez's injury. "I just felt that Chelsea had that little bit more flair and ability which we didn’t possess at the right moments today," admitted Everton boss David Moyes.
The prolonged treatment for Martinez threatened to disrupt Chelsea's rhythm, but they maintained control of the second half. Mike Penders came on for his Premier League debut, replacing the injured Martinez, and was largely untroubled, dealing with a few late Everton crosses. At the other end, Jordan Pickford made a crucial save to deny Joao Pedro.
Chelsea eventually secured their second goal when Neto calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner after Jordan Henderson’s free-kick was blocked by the Everton wall. "We are really pleased. Shame for Emi but we wish you all the best. This win is for him," Neto told TNT Sports. "We need a clean sheet, to be honest. I think we did a very good game. Emi deserved this, Mike did as well."
