A significant fire, resulting in fatalities and injuries, erupted at one of Canada's busiest military bases on Saturday. The blaze was ignited by an unspecified "serious incident" at the base located in Wainwright, a town in eastern Alberta province. Officials reported that the fire "spread rapidly due to high winds," as stated in a Facebook post by the municipal district on Saturday evening. The Wainwright Royal Canadian Mounted Police received a call for assistance around 4 p.m.
Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed in a video statement that "there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base." He withheld details regarding the number of casualties or the cause of the initial fire, describing the situation as "active and delicate" and announcing that an investigation would commence shortly. By late Saturday night, the municipal district indicated that the fire was "being held at this time," with fire crews continuing to monitor the area.
CFB Wainwright, situated approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles) southeast of Edmonton, is recognized as one of the nation's busiest Army bases. It serves as the location for the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, and also functions as a training ground for Army field force units based in Edmonton. Prime Minister Mark Carney corroborated that the fire originated from "a serious incident," without providing further specifics.
A code orange, signifying an emergency response protocol for a high patient volume, was declared in Edmonton, according to CBC, CNN's newsgathering partner. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, characterized the event as "a one in every 15- to 25-year disaster" and noted that Wainwright's healthcare facilities were "completely overwhelmed." Consequently, patients are being diverted to hospitals throughout Edmonton. CNN has sought comments from the Royal Alexandra Hospital, other Edmonton health centers, and Alberta Health Services. Inquiries have also been made to the military base, the Wainwright fire department, the Alberta premier’s office, and the municipal district.
The Canadian Armed Forces, the federal government, and provincial and local authorities are collaborating to "mobilize all necessary support, and working through the details of what actually occurred," stated McGuinty. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the disaster as "significant and tragic" and acknowledged it was "affecting many of our brave military personnel." No evacuation order has been issued. Authorities have urged residents to avoid the incident area, keep roads clear, and refrain from visiting the Wainwright Health Center unless for critical medical needs. McGuinty remarked in his video statement, in response to a journalist's question, that he could not recall such an incident in his tenure as minister or in recent memory. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also reported speaking with McGuinty and Carney about the fire, expressing gratitude to emergency responders and urging prayers for Wainwright.
