In a poignant display of respect, players from the Lions rugby team observed a moment of silence in honour of their South African teammate, Hyron Andrews, before their European Rugby Champions Cup match against La Rochelle. The solemn tribute took place at the Marcel-Deflandre Stadium in La Rochelle, western France, on October 17, 2026.

Andrews, a 31-year-old lock forward, tragically passed away in France on Friday, just before the highly anticipated game. Both SA Rugby, the sport's governing body in South Africa, and the Lions confirmed the heartbreaking news.

During the minute's silence, many Lions players were visibly emotional, with some shedding tears. The number five jersey, previously worn by Andrews, was placed on the field, and his image, along with his full name, Hyron Diego Andrews, was displayed on the stadium's big screen.

The crowd at Stade Marcel-Deflandre responded with spontaneous applause following the silence. In a gesture of solidarity, the French club La Rochelle presented a club shirt to the Lions' staff.

Television footage captured the Lions players forming a circle in their dressing room shortly before taking to the field. La Rochelle players, led by Gregory Alldritt, wore black armbands as a mark of respect.

Remi Tales, La Rochelle's backs coach, shared with match broadcaster beIN SPORTS that some of his team's players had visited the Lions' hotel on Friday to offer their support. He also confirmed that, after discussions between both clubs, the decision was made for the game to proceed. La Rochelle ultimately won the match with a score of 31-14.

Regarding the circumstances of his death, La Rochelle prosecutor Arnaud Laraize informed The Associated Press that Andrews was discovered in a shower cubicle, which was locked from the inside, on Friday morning. He had reportedly completed a hammam session approximately an hour prior.

Sources close to Andrews indicated that he had shown no prior signs of health issues in the days leading up to his passing. An investigation into the cause of death has been initiated, and an autopsy was scheduled.

SA Rugby stated that Andrews' death was a result of a fall. The talented player had also represented KZN Sharks and Sale Sharks during his career.

Rudolf Straeuli, CEO of SA Rugby, expressed the organization's deep sorrow: “We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron. He was not only a gifted rugby player but also a cherished member of our Lions family, having recently joined us this season.”

Sale Sharks also extended their condolences, sending “heartfelt condolences to his wife, their beautiful boys and the rest of his family and friends and everyone at Lions Rugby.” Andrews had played 45 times for Sale Sharks.

Alex Sanderson, Director of Rugby at Sale Sharks, remembered Andrews fondly: “Hyron was just a brilliant guy and a brilliant teammate. He was so skilled on the field but, off it, he was always someone you would want to have a beer with. He was funny and charismatic in his own unique, dry way and the lads, to a man, loved playing with him and being around him.”
