Dominic Calvert-Lewin's second-half goal earned Leeds United a hard-fought Premier League point against Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday. Manchester United, entering the match under scrutiny following defender Lisandro Martinez's public criticism of the club after their UEFA Champions League loss at Atletico Madrid, had taken the lead in the 35th minute. Attacker Bryan Mbeumo, who had earlier missed a clear header, found the net with a first-time finish from Youri Tieleman's precise pass across the box.
However, former Everton striker Calvert-Lewin ignited the home crowd by firing in an equalizer in the 51st minute. This goal secured a point that would propel Leeds to seventh place in the standings with 10 points, placing them six positions and three points ahead of Michael Carrick's side. For Manchester United, it marked a frustrating conclusion to a difficult week, extending their winless streak across all competitions to six games – their longest since the end of the 2019-20 season. They have managed only one league victory so far this season.
Leeds Manager Daniel Farke stated: “We are slightly disappointed it is just a point. Overall, I felt we should not be losing at half-time but it is still Manchester United. Second half, we got the equaliser, we should have kept up the dominance, too many strikes went over the crossbar but it was overall a solid performance. We should have won the game but we move on. We took it as a compliment that we have done many things right over the last month if we were seen as favourites against Manchester United but we have earned this. We wanted to prove the comments right. We were the dominant side but we couldn't capitalise as we lacked quality in and around the box. It says a lot about how much respect we have earned. Overall, this is where we are at the moment and overall, it is a good place to be. It is still difficult in this league to win points. You have to be clinical and be very, very effective but we have to keep going.”
Manchester United Manager Michael Carrick commented: “It was one of those challenging games. You could feel there was an edge to the game. Maybe if you talk about top quality, maybe it wasn't the top, top quality I think we are capable of playing. In little moments and spells we played some really good football. It's a tough place to come. With the results we've had we weren't quite flowing but there's enough in there to take from it. I was proud of the boys for the way they went about it in difficult circumstances. A point is a point. It is a step forward for us. The way that we went about it today gives me a lot of belief in us moving forward that we are a strong group and if we build on that with the quality we have got … we will win football matches.”
