Qatar and Singapore have formalized their energy partnership by agreeing to renew a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation. This move aims to bolster ties in investment, energy security, and technology, coinciding with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s official visit to Doha. The visit, which spans from October 18 to 20, marks Wong’s inaugural trip to the Middle East as prime minister.

During his visit, Prime Minister Wong held official talks with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani at the Amiri Diwan. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, with a particular emphasis on economic and investment sectors. Sheikh Tamim extended a warm welcome to Wong and his delegation, expressing optimism that the visit would strengthen the existing partnership and expand cooperation to mutual benefit.

Prime Minister Wong conveyed his gratitude for the hospitality and expressed a strong desire to elevate the bilateral relationship. The leaders engaged in discussions covering a broad spectrum of topics, including bilateral relations, avenues for expanded cooperation across various fields, and regional and international developments of shared interest. A separate meeting was also held for an exchange of views on current affairs.

Further discussions took place between Prime Minister Wong and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. Their meeting centered on strengthening collaboration in critical areas such as energy security, supply chain resilience, artificial intelligence (AI), and digitalization. Following this meeting, Wong shared on X that the discussions explored deepening the partnership, with a focus on enhancing energy security and supply chain resilience, alongside exploring new opportunities in AI and digitalization.

Wong also acknowledged Qatar’s significant role in facilitating dialogue and de-escalation efforts in the Middle East, underscoring the importance of ongoing diplomacy for regional peace and stability.

The renewal of the energy cooperation MoU was a key outcome of the visit. Sheikh Tamim and Prime Minister Wong witnessed the signing of the minutes from the ninth Qatar-Singapore High-Level Joint Committee meeting. Documents were exchanged, officially announcing the renewal of the MoU between QatarEnergy and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry. This renewed agreement specifically addresses liquefied natural gas (LNG) and cooperation in carbon reduction technology, signaling a continued commitment to energy collaboration and the exploration of innovative carbon reduction solutions.

The meeting was attended by several dignitaries, including Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Khulaifi, and other ministers. Singapore’s delegation included Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim, and other senior officials. Following the official proceedings, Sheikh Tamim hosted a luncheon in honor of Prime Minister Wong and his delegation.

Beyond official engagements, Prime Minister Wong visited Qatar Foundation’s Education City, where he was welcomed by Qatar Foundation Vice Chairperson Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani. The delegation received insights into Qatar Foundation’s ecosystem and its contributions to education, research, and community development. Sheikha Hind and Prime Minister Wong also discussed digital technology approaches that foster safety and balance.

Prime Minister Wong also toured the National Museum of Qatar, accompanied by Sheikh Thani bin Hamad Al Thani. The visit provided an opportunity to explore exhibits detailing Qatar’s geological evolution, natural environments, archaeological findings, petroglyphs, and the historical lifestyles of Qataris both inland and along the coast. The tour included a digital exhibition, displays of pearl and jewelry design, and galleries chronicling Qatar’s modern history post-oil and gas discovery.
