An Indian court has extended the detention of two prominent leaders from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das. This decision comes as the government intensifies its crackdown on near-daily protests organized by the youth-led movement. Ranka and Das were arrested while participating in a demonstration at a historically significant protest site, despite an existing ban. Their subsequent jailing sparked a new protest in New Delhi on Friday.

The CJP is a key organization behind the ongoing protests, which are demanding the resignation of India’s election chief. The protests stem from a controversial revision of voter lists, which critics allege is designed to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Last week, Ranka and Das were among 14 protesters who breached barricades to enter the Jantar Mantar observatory, a day after it was removed from the list of approved demonstration sites. A court initially remanded the activists to prison for five days. On Monday evening, Indian media reported that their detention was extended by two more days to allow police further questioning.

Delhi Police have not yet responded to requests for comment. "This is an absolute mockery of the judicial system," stated the CJP’s legal head, Ratna Singh, to reporters outside the court, announcing the party's intention to challenge the order in a higher court. The CJP has been holding near-daily protests throughout October concerning the revision of voter rolls.

The CJP, in collaboration with opposition parties and left-wing student organizations, has spearheaded the month's protests, calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demand follows the removal of 130 million names from voter lists. The Election Commission has stated that these lists included 28 million deceased individuals, 63 million who have relocated, and 30 million untraceable voters. The commission denies any partisan favoritism, asserting that wrongly deleted voters can re-enroll.

The BJP has accused its political rivals of attempting to destabilize democracy by falsely challenging legitimate electoral procedures. On Friday, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, student leaders, and several supporters were also detained as hundreds gathered in central Delhi for a protest supporting Das and Ranka. Despite these detentions, the youth-led movement maintains its resolve. Earlier this year, a sit-in protest led by the CJP and its supporters resulted in the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following exam paper leaks.
