US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth held an unannounced meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, as discussions reportedly focused on the potential for renewed major combat operations against Iran, according to American media outlets. The meeting, which included Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, took place on Monday evening at Ovda Airbase in southern Israel, Axios reported, citing two sources. CNN also reported on the visit, quoting two sources and a US official. The Pentagon has declined to comment on Secretary Hegseth’s travel plans. Reports indicate that Secretary Hegseth also met with US troops stationed at the base and subsequently shared an image of his visit to personnel from US Central Command, the entity responsible for American military operations throughout the Middle East. This visit occurred just days before Israel's election on October 27 and one day after US President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Prime Minister Netanyahu, referring to him as a "great warrior prime minister." In a video shared by Prime Minister Netanyahu on Tuesday, the Israeli leader expressed gratitude to President Trump for his support, calling him "by far, the greatest friend Israel has ever had and will have in the White House." Prime Minister Netanyahu stated, "Donald, we have a job to finish. You said it, and we’ll finish it together." He further emphasized that the strong alliance between the United States and Israel has proven their capability to achieve significant outcomes collaboratively. Additionally, he noted the potential for expanding the Abraham Accords, agreements that established diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab nations during President Trump's initial term. Prime Minister Netanyahu also commended President Trump for addressing what he identified as the primary threat to Americans – an Iran possessing nuclear weapons, asserting, "We won’t let it happen." President Trump’s endorsement appears to stem from shared strategic interests concerning Iran, as well as the political significance of maintaining a robust relationship with Prime Minister Netanyahu during a period of regional instability. This backing also serves to bolster Prime Minister Netanyahu's standing prior to the election, as he aims to highlight his administration's close ties with Washington as a security asset for Israel. Concurrently, President Trump has an interest in a dependable Israeli partner to support his administration's regional objectives. However, reports suggest that the two leaders may have differing views on the trajectory of the Iran conflict and the feasibility of diplomatic efforts in Gaza and other areas. There has been no public confirmation of any specific agreement that links the endorsement to Israeli policy concessions or a recommitment to military action.
