Manchester coach Michael Carrick has urged his club to increase their spending in the transfer market to keep pace with their Premier League title rivals ahead of the new campaign.

Since the conclusion of last season, United have invested approximately 85 million pounds ($114m) on the acquisitions of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Karl Darlow. However, this financial outlay remains modest compared to fellow title contenders like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea, who have continued to commit massive sums to high-profile players.

Carrick recognizes that securing a first English title since 2013, alongside competing in the Champions League, demands greater squad depth and quality. Notably, United's club-record transfer remains the 89.5 million pounds ($120.7m) paid for Paul Pogba in 2016. Ahead of his inaugural full season as permanent manager following a successful interim tenure, Carrick has publicly called on the club's leadership to pursue additional reinforcements.

“I think we’ve done really good business and we’ve got really some top, top, top players,” Carrick stated to reporters on Thursday. “We’re delighted with that. We always want to improve. We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that. That never stops.”

Having steered United to a third-place finish in the Premier League after taking over from the dismissed Ruben Amorim, Carrick faces growing restlessness from supporters. With spending currently trailing even promoted sides Coventry and Ipswich, anxiety is rising as the Premier League opener against Hull on August 22 approaches.

“Money’s money, I get that. It’s still about the football, and that’s where the competition lies,” Carrick remarked. “Certainly, the situation is what it is as well, whether that’s finances or whatever. For now, we’ve got to make the most of it, but we’ve got to keep pushing and push everything and every boundary that we can to be able to win again.”

When questioned about why United are not spending on par with other clubs, Carrick responded, “To be honest, I haven’t got the answers for that. We’re working with pushing everything that we can to make the best of it.”

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has rejoined the squad this week following a loan spell at Barcelona and a subsequent return from the World Cup. With Barcelona opting against purchasing the 28-year-old England forward, his long-term future at United remains a talking point.

“He’s our player, and he’s a good player, and he gives us something a little bit different in the group,” Carrick noted. “Marcus can offer us so much. He has done, and he can do again, so in that respect it’s quite exciting.”

Despite the cautious approach in the transfer market, several players have backed the team to challenge Arsenal for the championship, and Carrick refused to dismiss a title push entirely.

“We’ve definitely got the potential to achieve something really special,” he said. “I’m not hiding from the fact, and we should aim to do that, but I can’t give you a definite answer on that. It’s certainly what we’re pushing to do because we have to, because that’s the club we are.”
