Two individuals lost their lives in Israeli air strikes across Gaza on Thursday, including a high-ranking police official located in Gaza city.
The initial strike targeted two people traveling on a motorcycle situated in a western area of Khan Younis within the southern Gaza Strip. This attack resulted in one fatality and left the other person wounded, according to local medics. The military of Israel stated that they targeted a Hamas commander who was allegedly planning an assault against its troops.
During a subsequent attack, a drone launched three missiles directed at a vehicle positioned in the Sheikh Ajleen neighbourhood of Gaza city. This strike caused one death and injured two other individuals, as reported by the Palestinian Wafa news agency. Information provided by the Gaza Interior Ministry identified the deceased as police colonel Jamal Abu Kamal. Furthermore, the Israeli military released video footage of the incident, claiming the operation eliminated a Hamas commander involved in the October 7 attacks.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Israeli military reported executing an air strike aimed at eliminating a threat directed at its troops. Medics in Gaza noted that one person sustained critical injuries during this incident, which took place in Beit Lahia located in the north of the enclave.
These military actions occurred following a period of relative calm lasting more than a week, which had followed pressure from the US urging acceptance of a novel proposal within President Donald Trump's peace plan. Under this framework, Hamas would systematically disarm while Israel withdrew its forces from Gaza. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly dismissed the proposal on Sunday. Meanwhile, Hamas maintained that executing any agreement relied upon Israel fulfilling its obligations, which included withdrawing forces and ceasing all attacks.
