Cairo, Egypt – In a significant move to bolster its energy sector, Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, convened with key figures including Cypriot Energy Minister Michael Damianos, East Mediterranean Gas Forum Secretary-General Osama Mobarez, and executives from international oil and gas companies operating within Egypt. The primary objective of the meeting was to strategize on accelerating investments and increasing production within the nation's vital oil and gas industry.

The discussions took place during a roundtable event titled “The Future of Energy in Egypt,” held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as an integral part of the Mediterranean Offshore Conference and Exhibition (MOC). Central to the dialogue was the expedited development of discovered reserves and their seamless integration with existing infrastructure. The aim is to maximize the economic benefits derived from Egypt's oil and gas resources, foster stronger regional cooperation, and solidify Egypt's standing as a premier regional hub for energy trading.

Minister Badawi emphasized that partnerships with investors are founded on mutual interests, asserting that the success of companies operating in Egypt directly contributes to the prosperity of the country's oil and gas sector and the Egyptian state. He reiterated the ministry's dedication to resolving challenges faced by its partners and cultivating an environment conducive to expanded investments, thereby generating sustainable economic returns for all stakeholders.

Addressing the challenge of declining production, Badawi highlighted the necessity of stimulating investment, accelerating exploration and development activities, and enhancing operational efficiency. He stressed the ministry's focus on strengthening collaborations with partners, mitigating factors impacting production, and establishing more robust foundations for future growth.

The current phase, according to Badawi, demands more effective partnerships through direct engagement with companies. This dialogue is crucial for understanding their needs and proposals, identifying measures to expedite investment decisions and project implementation, and ultimately boosting the competitiveness of Egypt's oil and gas sector for investors.

Badawi also underscored the importance of regional cooperation among Eastern Mediterranean nations. By leveraging available resources and existing infrastructure, countries can unlock greater economic value from discovered gas reserves and support the development of new resources. He pointed to Egypt's significant advantages, including its advanced natural gas infrastructure, extensive transportation networks, gas reception and trading facilities, liquefaction capabilities, and strategic location, as key assets that position it to play a central role in the regional energy system.

Osama Mobarez, Secretary-General of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum, concurred that Egypt's energy future is intrinsically linked to regional cooperation. He noted the Eastern Mediterranean's substantial discovered natural gas resources and promising potential, which necessitate increased investment and infrastructure development to realize their full value. Mobarez identified accessing these resources and converting them into sustainable economic value through viable projects and accelerated development as the primary challenge.

He further stated that achieving these goals requires clear regulatory frameworks and investment-friendly policies that empower the private sector in financing and implementing projects, alongside the development of essential transportation infrastructure. The East Mediterranean Gas Forum, Mobarez added, actively works to enhance cooperation among governments, companies, technology providers, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies to identify priority projects, attract investment, and expedite infrastructure development.

Executives from international partner companies affirmed Egypt's competitive advantages in attracting investment, citing its infrastructure, strategic location, technical expertise, and data availability. They highlighted promising opportunities for accelerating project implementation and resource utilization. The importance of transparent, trust-based government-investor partnerships was stressed, with participants noting that the settlement of outstanding dues has bolstered confidence in Egypt's investment climate.

To sustain investment flows, participants emphasized the need for a stable and predictable investment environment, clear regulatory frameworks, and long-term government-private sector partnerships. They also pointed out that the true value of resources lies in efficient development, production, and marketing, requiring flexible business models, advanced technologies, and AI tools to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.

The discussions concluded by underscoring the need for greater integration and cooperation among Eastern Mediterranean countries and companies, coupled with coordinated efforts in developing regulatory and commercial frameworks, infrastructure, and gas transportation to support energy security and sustainable development.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources stated that the roundtable demonstrated its commitment to deepening dialogue with investment partners and finding practical solutions to sector challenges, with the ultimate goals of increasing investment, accelerating resource development, boosting production, maximizing infrastructure utilization, and reinforcing Egypt's role as a regional energy hub.
