Brazilian right-wing presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro has presented stringent conditions for the release of his personal records, responding to a challenge from his opponent in the upcoming election run-off, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro's campaign has stated that they will disclose the data requested by Lula only if the president agrees to broaden his own pledge to reveal personal records. This expansion would include the records of his advisers, security personnel, and information from companies associated with Lula's children.

Earlier this week, Lula announced his willingness to share his bank, tax, and telephone records, as well as those of his family, provided Bolsonaro reciprocates. Lula's campaign has submitted a conditional authorization to Brazil's electoral court to release the president's personal data. Camilo Santana, a senator and Lula campaign representative, informed journalists that Lula has accepted Bolsonaro's latest demands, and an official response will be filed with the court on Thursday morning.

The call for transparency from Lula emerged as both campaigns grapple with the repercussions of a significant corruption scandal involving banker Daniel Vorcaro, which has implicated prominent figures and institutions across Brazil. Bolsonaro, who currently holds a narrow lead over Lula in opinion polls, is himself under investigation for alleged corruption and money laundering linked to an investment he reportedly sought from Vorcaro. He is also facing a separate probe for alleged money laundering, though he denies all allegations.

The Brazilian president is also connected to a corruption scandal through his son, Fabio Luis Lula da Silva, a businessman. The son is reportedly being investigated for allegedly using his influence to grant another businessman improper access to the government. Furthermore, Lula's eldest son is under investigation for his ties to a businessman who was detained in connection with a pension fraud probe. Lula's son has denied these allegations, and the president has stated that his son will be subject to the same legal process as any other citizen.
