Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is anticipating a memorable occasion at the upcoming Ballon d'Or ceremony in his hometown of London. The England captain, who made the move from Tottenham and London to join Bayern Munich in 2023, is considered a strong contender for the award.
Last season, Kane netted an impressive 73 goals for both club and country, a tally second only to Lionel Messi's record of 82 in the 2010-2011 season. His recent performance against his former rivals Arsenal further highlighted his evolution as a player since his transfer to Germany.
During the match, Kane showcased his all-around game by dropping deep to collect goal kicks and initiate Bayern's attack, even providing a precise long-range assist for Alphonso Davies's equalizer. In the second half, he earned and converted a penalty, giving Bayern the lead. The game ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw, with England teammate Declan Rice scoring late for Arsenal.
Despite being the odds-on favorite to win his first Ballon d'Or, the competition remains open with strong candidates such as Spain's Lamine Yamal and Rodri, France's Kylian Mbappe, and teammate Michael Olise. While Yamal and Mbappe have publicly expressed their claims for the award, Kane has maintained a reserved stance amidst persistent media attention.
Addressing his chances after his standout performance against Arsenal, Kane stated, "I try not to think about it. Obviously, it’s hard. There’s rumours flying around, so you try and stay away from it. I’m going to try and enjoy Monday night as much as possible. It’s a big occasion and a big event."
The Ballon d'Or is officially awarded based on individual performances, character, team achievements, and fair play. Historically, winners have often combined major team trophies like the Champions League or World Cup with exceptional individual statistics. Kane certainly meets the latter criterion.
Although Kane won the league and cup double with Bayern Munich last year, bringing his career trophy count to five, the Bavarian giants' domestic dominance might not be a significant advantage. Bayern reached the Champions League semifinals, narrowly losing to the eventual champions, Paris Saint-Germain. Kane also captained England to a third-place finish at the World Cup, scoring six goals and providing an assist.
Kane's scoring streak continues in the Champions League, with at least one goal in his last 10 consecutive matches, just one shy of Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 11. "Whenever you’re in any conversation with Ronaldo it means you’re doing something special, especially in this competition," Kane remarked.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany lauded Kane's team-oriented approach, noting, "What made Harry happy the most in recent years is that he finally won his first team trophies here. Now if he can crown his career or his season with the Ballon d’Or, that would be deserved for the way he plays for the team."
Declan Rice also offered high praise for his international captain, stating, "Harry is the clear winner [of the Ballon d’Or]. His numbers speak for themselves. The year he had is remarkable. For a striker to play that pass for their first goal, then take the penalty how he did, … he’s ridiculous. He’s such a good player."
Former England midfielder Steven Gerrard, alongside Jude Bellingham, has referred to Kane as "arguably the best England player there’s been" following his impressive display against Arsenal. Michael Owen, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2001, and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the last Bayern player to receive the honor in 1981, are notable past recipients.
Reflecting on the potential award, Kane commented, "Monday could be a special night. We’ll have to wait and see. I’m trying not to think about it too much because we have important games and another one on Sunday. I know it’s a massive event. I am looking forward to it for sure. Hopefully, it’ll be a special night."
