While eschewing some traditional public roles, she is engaging behind the scenes in substantive policy work through her foster care initiative, “Fostering the Future.” In recent weeks, she has skipped several high-profile events, spending time away from the White House while her team focuses on a more targeted policy operation than during her husband’s first term.

Since returning to the White House, she has pushed for an executive order signed by the president last November to track child welfare data, end the orphan tax, and secure a $25 million investment in the 2026 budget for housing and support for youth transitioning out of the system.
