Alpha Dhabi Holding, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi-listed International Holding Company, has entered into an agreement to allocate $1 billion towards investments in artificial intelligence (AI) companies worldwide. The investment will be channeled through the Alpha Wave Global-managed fund, Alpha Wave III, which also focuses on high-growth companies, according to a statement released on Monday. Alpha Dhabi plans to deploy this capital over time, aligning with the fund's capital calls and investment program, as detailed in a filing to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. The returns generated by the Alpha Wave III fund will be contingent upon the performance and valuation of its underlying investments, with value anticipated to be realized through distributions and exits throughout the fund's lifecycle. This strategic commitment is consistent with Alpha Dhabi's growth strategy and aims to expand its reach into AI and innovation-driven opportunities, as stated by Hamad Al Ameri, managing director and group chief executive of Alpha Dhabi. He further noted that this investment supports the company's portfolio diversification goals and its commitment to long-term value creation.
This new commitment builds upon Alpha Dhabi's previous investment of Dh9.2 billion ($2.5 billion) in Alpha Wave Ventures II in 2022. That fund, established by Chimera Capital and Alpha Wave, received an initial capital contribution of Dh2.6 billion and an undrawn commitment of Dh6.6 billion for investments in growth-stage companies globally. Through this venture fund, Alpha Dhabi has secured indirect exposure to prominent companies such as SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Alpha Dhabi intends to finance its investment in Alpha Wave III by utilizing cash distributions from Alpha Wave Ventures II and its existing financial resources. The company indicated on Monday that the financial impact of this investment will be recognized progressively, corresponding with the timing of capital deployment and investment performance.
Established in 2013, Alpha Dhabi oversees a diverse portfolio comprising over 250 public and private investments across 45 countries. The company actively invests in companies operating within high-growth sectors, including AI and technology, real estate, industry, construction, healthcare, energy, and hospitality. In August, Alpha Dhabi enhanced its stake and capital commitment in its private credit joint venture with Mubadala Investment Company, the emirate's sovereign wealth fund. Under the revised agreement, the company increased its capital commitment to Micad Credit JV to $1 billion and raised its shareholding from 20% to 40%. Micad currently manages approximately $1.7 billion in assets across 45 portfolio companies.
Earlier in May, Ta'ziz, based in Abu Dhabi, finalized a deal with Alpha Dhabi to target $10 billion in capital investment for its new industrial chemicals ecosystem within the emirate. At the time, both companies announced they were conducting a joint feasibility and market study, with the initiative subject to final investment decisions and regulatory approvals.
