Italian prodigy Kimi Antonelli is one step closer to securing his first Formula One championship after clinching his ninth victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver capitalized on his pole position, finishing the race at the Circuit of the Americas with a commanding time of 1:35:16.650. He crossed the finish line a substantial 13.078 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc of Monaco.
With five races remaining, Antonelli has not yet mathematically secured the title, but his lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell has now extended to 123 points. Russell faces a must-win scenario at the next race in Mexico City to keep his championship hopes alive; otherwise, the title will likely go to Antonelli, who has rapidly become a dominant force in his second F1 season.
"I'm aware [securing the championship] is close, but the mindset doesn’t change," Antonelli stated post-race. "I want to finish the season on a high, to go into 2027 with high hopes."
The strategic gamble by Antonelli and Mercedes paid off handsomely. While several competitors opted for a two-stop strategy, Antonelli executed a flawless one-stop race, pitting only on Lap 25 and not returning to the pit lane again. "It was a perfect way to end the weekend; it was an incredible team effort, especially from strategy to believe in me and go for one stop," Antonelli added.
Antonelli has now won five consecutive Grands Prix, including the Miami Grand Prix earlier in the season. This victory marks his second win in the United States this year, with the Las Vegas Grand Prix still on the calendar for November. Red Bull Racing's four-time F1 champion, Max Verstappen, completed the podium, finishing 17.485 seconds behind Antonelli. Verstappen, who had won every championship from 2021 to 2024, has now been mathematically eliminated from this year's title chase.
"Our overall pace was not good enough, and the tyres we had available were not the right ones," Verstappen commented. "We still managed to get on the podium, maybe a bit lucky with the [Virtual Safety Car] at the end."
A Virtual Safety Car was deployed on Lap 52 following Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac coming to a stop on the track. The safety car period lasted until the penultimate lap, by which time Antonelli had built an insurmountable lead.
Mercedes extended its lead in the constructors' standings to 133 points over Ferrari, now holding a 607 to 474 advantage. Antonelli's personal lead over Russell in the drivers' standings grew to 123 points.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff lauded Antonelli's performance, calling it his
