UAE Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh has expressed her dedication to fostering a future where Palestinians and Israelis can coexist in 'security, freedom and dignity,' as she enters the race to become the next UN Secretary General. Ms. Nusseibeh, who previously served as the UAE's representative to the United Nations, welcomed Palestine's endorsement of her candidacy, which was officially announced on Wednesday. The current Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, will conclude his second and final term at the end of the year, and Ms. Nusseibeh is gaining significant regional backing for her pursuit of the position.
The prominent Emirati diplomat has been a key figure in shaping UAE foreign policy and a vocal advocate for peace in Gaza, emphasizing the critical need for aid delivery to the enclave. "Throughout my career, including at the United Nations, I have worked to advance a political pathway that enables Palestinians and Israelis to live in security, freedom and dignity," Ms. Nusseibeh stated on the social media platform X, acknowledging Palestine's support for her campaign. "I deeply appreciate Palestine’s confidence in my candidacy."
In November 2025, during a visit to Cyprus aimed at strengthening aid efforts, she highlighted the importance of sustained assistance for civilians impacted by the Gaza war. Ms. Nusseibeh noted that a maritime corridor from Cyprus would be vital for escalating relief operations. She was appointed Minister of State in September 2025, having previously held positions as Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Prior to these roles, she served as the UAE's ambassador to the UN for over a decade, concluding her tenure in April 2024.
The Emirates continues to lead efforts in providing financial aid to Gaza and ensuring a consistent flow of essential supplies to those in need. In August, the UAE marked over 1,000 days of uninterrupted support, dispatching more than Dh14.2 billion ($3.89 billion) in aid. This funding has facilitated the establishment of a floating hospital in Egypt and two medical centers in Gaza, and has enabled the treatment of thousands of patients, including those with cancer and war-related injuries, in the Emirates.
While a US-backed ceasefire in October 2025 temporarily halted major hostilities in Gaza, Israeli strikes have persisted, and progress toward a lasting peace remains limited. The ongoing conflict has displaced a significant portion of Gaza's population, exceeding two million people, exacerbating a severe humanitarian crisis marked by chronic food shortages and restricted access to healthcare and aid.
