A localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the occupied city of Oleshky, brokered with the assistance of First Lady Melania Trump, has officially taken effect, officials from both nations confirmed on Tuesday. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s parliament commissioner for human rights, announced the ceasefire began at 3:00 a.m. Kyiv time via a post on X. Concurrently, Russia’s defense ministry stated on Telegram that it had ceased shelling in the direction of Oleshky at the same hour.

This pause in hostilities is specifically designed to facilitate the evacuation of elderly residents and deliver critical humanitarian aid to Oleshky, a city on the front lines that has been under Russian occupation since the early days of the invasion in 2022. Ukrainian authorities report that approximately 1,700 individuals remain in the city.

Lubinets described the ceasefire as “part of a humanitarian mission being carried out with the mediation and coordination of US First Lady Melania Trump, in cooperation with Yana Lantratova, Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights.” The duration of the ceasefire was not immediately clear.

Meanwhile, fighting persisted in other areas. Ukraine’s Emergency Service reported that an attack on Kyiv resulted in the death of a 46-year-old woman and injured over a dozen others, also causing damage to a bridge. Russia’s military claimed to have conducted a “massive strike” targeting Ukrainian military facilities, a logistics center in Kharkiv, and transport infrastructure in Kyiv, in addition to intercepting and destroying 222 Ukrainian drones over its territory.

The First Lady had announced on Friday that she had engaged with Ukrainian and Russian leadership to secure the localized ceasefire, acting as the “exclusive intermediary.” In a statement, Melania Trump highlighted the dire conditions in Oleshky, noting limited electricity, mined roads, and regular military attacks. She stated that non-military, civilian leaders from both countries would collaborate to visit Oleshky residents, assess their needs, and provide assistance. Residents wishing to evacuate would receive coordinated support and transportation to their chosen destinations, whether Russia or Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Saturday that Kyiv had been engaged in negotiations for this deal for “some time.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged Trump’s “significant contribution” to the agreement. Donald Trump also praised his wife’s efforts, stating that she had contacted both sides and that both were amenable to the ceasefire, emphasizing her continued focus on aiding children affected by the war.

According to the Vatican, Pope Leo discussed the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky with Putin on October 16 during a phone call, while recovering from lung cancer surgery. The First Lady’s office previously indicated that the situation in Oleshky came to her attention during a private discussion at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.
