Alexander Isak's tenure at Liverpool began inauspiciously, marked by a controversial transfer from Newcastle United and a lack of pre-season conditioning. This difficult start was compounded by a serious fibula fracture sustained just 14 minutes into his 10th Premier League appearance of the season for the reigning champions, Liverpool, during their win against Tottenham Hotspur in December. The Swedish striker managed only four goals in 22 appearances across all competitions in his debut season, a stark contrast to his 27 goals in 42 games for Newcastle the previous season. This downturn led to significant doubts about his ability to justify Liverpool's British-record £125 million investment.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledged Isak's challenging year in April, stating, “It is quite an understatement to say he's had a tough year. But now he is fit, and we all know what he can bring, and he shows it in training and in games as well. It is about getting games, confidence, but obviously scoring goals as a striker – that's the main trigger for him. I'm not worried at all about him whatsoever.”

Following the sacking of manager Arne Slot, who was replaced by Andoni Iraola, Isak was expected to lead the line, especially with fellow forward Hugo Ekitike sidelined until December due to an Achilles tendon rupture. However, Isak has seemingly embraced the responsibility. His recent form has been impressive, with his sixth goal in seven Premier League games securing a 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, placing him second only to Erling Haaland in the scoring charts so far this season.

Isak expressed his current state of mind: “I feel good, I feel like I’m in a good place. It has been challenging, of course, with a lot of injuries especially. But there have been some beautiful moments as well, good learning moments. I take all of that as stuff to help me get better and get stronger, not looking back too much and just focusing on what’s ahead.”

Notably, Isak's goals have all come from within the penalty area, highlighting his retained poaching instincts. Manager Andoni Iraola has been instrumental in setting up the team to maximize his striker's potential. Ahead of their League Cup tie against Chelsea at Anfield, Iraola commented on the trust Isak now feels at the club, stating, “Everyone trusts [that] if he moves into good positions he will score goals. But I always tell him he has to help us so we can give him the chances, and I think he understands that necessity. I hope that can continue at the same level.”

The win against Brighton propelled Liverpool into the top four, ahead of Chelsea. Iraola plans to rotate his squad for the upcoming fixture against Chelsea, emphasizing the team's desire to win and remain competitive despite a demanding schedule.

Chelsea, managed by former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso, are experiencing their own inconsistencies. Despite a high-scoring offense, their defense has been a weakness. Alonso will be without the suspended Cole Palmer and the injured Joao Pedro for the match against Liverpool. Alonso acknowledged the team's disappointment after their recent London derby defeat to Tottenham Hotspur but stressed the need to focus on the upcoming game and find solutions rather than excuses. He also addressed Cole Palmer's red card, noting that the player understands his mistake and that such incidents should be avoided.
