The United Kingdom has achieved a significant milestone in its defense posture by deploying three of its four nuclear deterrent submarines concurrently at sea for the first time in five years, as reported by The Times. These Vanguard-class submarines, including HMS Vanguard, HMS Vigilant, and HMS Vengeance, are reportedly armed with ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The fourth submarine, HMS Victorious, is currently undergoing maintenance.

A navy source described the deployment as "unusual" to The Times, without providing further details. The UK maintains a continuous deployment of at least one of its four submarines as a security guarantee. This recent development has sparked discussions regarding a potential shift in the UK's defense strategy, particularly following Defence Secretary Wes Streeting's recent warning that Britain must prepare for war.

This is not the first time three submarines have been at sea; the last occurrence was over five years ago. According to Navy Lookout, one submarine carrying ballistic missiles has been on continuous patrol since 1969. It is understood that a second vessel was preparing to relieve a patrol, while the third was likely engaged in sea trials or work-up activities. Last year, HMS Vanguard completed a 200-day patrol, narrowly missing the record set by HMS Victorious in 2021 with a 207-day deployment.

A spokesperson for the defence ministry stated that the UK's nuclear deterrent is the "cornerstone of our national security, protecting the UK and our NATO allies every moment of every day." The spokesperson emphasized that the UK remains the only European ally to commit its nuclear deterrent to NATO's defense, thereby extending protection to all NATO allies. This statement follows a recent joint exercise between British and French fighter jets, which included France's airborne nuclear capability, highlighting deepening nuclear cooperation between the two nations.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting recently articulated in The Telegraph that Britain needs to be ready for war within 1,000 days, citing the increasing capacity of adversaries. He warned that by 2030, adversaries' force strength and war economy could position them to attack, necessitating a readiness to "fight and win" with allies. This warning coincides with the government's "Be Ready" campaign, which advises households on preparing for potential disruptions, such as cyberattacks or weather events affecting infrastructure, by storing essential supplies.
