The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced the postponement of all 24 Copa del Rey games originally scheduled for Wednesday. This decision comes in the wake of a devastating train accident in central Spain that resulted in at least 30 fatalities and approximately 80 injuries, with authorities warning the death toll could increase.

The collision occurred when a high-speed train struck the rear of a stationary train. The RFEF expressed its profound shock and solidarity with the victims, stating, “The entire Spanish football community stands united in grief over this tragedy and has made itself available to the authorities to assist the victims of this devastating accident.” A revised tournament schedule will be provided at a later date.

Matches scheduled for Thursday have not been affected, nor were games played on Tuesday. The Spanish league has also not announced any postponements for the upcoming weekend fixtures.

Among the Copa del Rey matches postponed were Navalcarnero vs. Real Betis, Salamanca vs. Celta Vigo, and Tavernes vs. Valencia.

Several Spanish football clubs have extended their condolences and support. FC Barcelona conveyed its sympathy on social media, wishing for a speedy recovery for all those injured. Real Madrid also issued a statement sharing in the grief of those impacted by the tragedy.

Sevilla FC observed a moment of silence before their training session on Wednesday and canceled manager Luis Garcia Plaza’s press conference, which had been scheduled ahead of their match against Sporting de Hortaleza.
