Opener Shadman Islam remained unbeaten on 99, guiding Bangladesh to a strong position of 213-3 on the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies. Play was called off after 74 overs due to bad light, with the left-hander just shy of his third Test century. Islam’s resilient innings included 10 fours from 219 balls, and he was supported by Litton Das, who was 10 not out at the close of play.
Bangladesh batting coach Mohammad Salahuddin expressed the team's collective anxiety as Islam approached his milestone. "It was nerve-racking even for us — at the end of the day, the whole team was nervous because everyone wanted him to get to his hundred," Salahuddin stated on Wednesday. He added, “He has played around 30 (32) Test matches but has only two centuries, and I think that number should have been higher.”
Earlier, Towhid Hridoy had to retire hurt on 42 after a cramps-induced issue, having formed an 88-run partnership with Islam for the fourth wicket, which helped stabilize the innings. The West Indies had made an early breakthrough when Tanzid Hasan was caught at second slip off Jayden Seales for nine. Mominul Haque contributed 28 runs before being dismissed by Jomel Warrican’s left-arm spin.
Shadman Islam had guided Bangladesh to lunch at 96-2. Shortly after the break, Warrican struck again, trapping Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto leg before wicket for 19. "Ideally, I would want one more wicket, but we have control of the game. The game never got away from us,” Warrican commented. “We were very disciplined as a bowling group. Even if you’re not getting wickets, you try to be as disciplined as possible. That’s the key, which we did very well. But ideally, we wanted at least one or two more wickets today.”
Islam reached his half-century off 95 balls. He found a solid partner in Hridoy, who replaced the injured Mushfiqur Rahim in the lineup. They batted through the afternoon session, taking Bangladesh to 177-3 by the tea break. Hridoy’s departure due to cramps, as he neared his maiden Test fifty, was followed by a one-hour interruption due to bad light. Play resumed briefly before being called off for the day.
Jomel Warrican was the most effective bowler for the West Indies, taking 2 wickets for 33 runs.
