Members of the Taliban attended a rally marking five years in power outside the former US embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 15, 2026. Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities have officially released two United Nations staff members who were detained for more than a week, although the exact reasons for their initial arrest remain unclarified, according to the UN.
The two men had been taken into custody in the western city of Herat on August 9. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced that they were freed on Thursday morning and appeared to be in good health. “UNAMA has not been formally notified of the reasons for their arrest and detention and continues to follow up with the de facto authorities,” the UN stated, noting its understanding that all charges against the two men have been dropped.
The organisation added that it is continuing to work “to ensure respect for the privileges and immunities of the United Nations, as well as the safety, security and freedom of movement of United Nations and associated personnel throughout the country.” These recent arrests are part of an ongoing series of detentions carried out by Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities. Previously, Human Rights Watch reported that six staff members of a local organisation focused on women’s and children’s rights had been “forcibly disappeared” for over a month.
“For us, we’re just delighted that the two staff members have been released, they’re in good health, and they face apparently no more judicial legal issues,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric informed reporters at the organisation’s headquarters in New York. Meanwhile, Afghan authorities have not yet provided an immediate comment regarding the release.
Multiple UN agencies continue to operate across Afghanistan across various sectors, including health and humanitarian response. The nation has suffered significantly from international aid cuts and faces immense challenges, such as the return of millions of citizens from Iran and Pakistan over recent years. The mandate of the UN mission from the UN Security Council encompasses promoting and supporting humanitarian assistance for the Afghan people, advocating for human rights, supporting equality for women and girls, fostering inclusive governance, and maintaining economic stability.
The Taliban originally seized power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, following the withdrawal of United States and NATO forces after two decades of war. Following their takeover, they barred girls from pursuing education beyond primary school and prohibited women from nearly all forms of employment, effectively excluding women and girls from public life. Additionally, they removed minimum-age protections concerning girls’ marriage and restricted the punishment of domestic violence solely to instances where a woman sustains visible injuries or broken bones.
