Apple has officially entered the touchscreen laptop market, introducing its first-ever touchscreen MacBook Pro featuring the advanced PROLED XDR display. The announcement was made by the California-based technology giant at an event held in Los Angeles. Pre-orders are now open, with shipments scheduled to commence on November 6. The new MacBook Pro starts at $2,899 for a configuration equipped with an M5 Pro processor. Customers will have the choice of 14-inch and 16-inch PROLED XDR displays for the touchscreen MacBook. A 14-inch model with an M5 Max chip is priced from $4,499, while the 16-inch version begins at $4,799. Enhancing the audio experience, Apple has also integrated a six-speaker sound system into the new laptops. Notably, attendees at the Los Angeles event observed that the iconic Apple logo on the back of the new MacBook Pro now glows, a design element that was a hallmark of Apple laptops for years before being discontinued in 2015.
Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer, hailed the new MacBook Pro as a "monumental step forward." He stated, "PROLED XDR is the world’s best laptop display." Srouji elaborated, "It pairs state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology with advanced algorithms in our display engine to deliver the kind of visual fidelity pros have been dreaming of." The official Apple news release highlighted the introduction of "intuitive touch capabilities on the Mac for the first time,” suggesting it opens “up a whole new dimension for pros to interact with their content, from manipulating 3D models to playing musical instruments on screen." A promotional video released by Apple showcased the laptop's impressive "10,000,000:1 contrast ratio" and other distinctive features, with a narrator remarking, "It looks so real you'll want to reach out and touch it," as users demonstrated the touchscreen functionality.
Connectivity options on the new MacBook Pro include three Thunderbolt 5 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe, and a headphone jack. "We’ve created a whole new way for pros to interact with their content, taking their workflows to a completely new level,” Srouji explained, emphasizing that the new MacBook Pro is the “result of the deep integration between Apple silicon, hardware and software, and there’s simply nothing else like it". This move by Apple is particularly noteworthy given the past skepticism of its co-founder and former chief executive, Steve Jobs, regarding touchscreen laptops. In 2010, Jobs had dismissed the concept, stating, "Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical, and it gives a great demo but after a short period of time, you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off. It doesn't work, it's ergonomically terrible." Approximately 16 years later, Apple appears confident in its research and development to embrace this technology.
The introduction of the touchscreen MacBook Pro follows a pattern observed by Apple enthusiasts, where concepts initially dismissed by Apple or Steve Jobs have later been adopted by the company, such as video-capable iPods, stylus pens, larger iPhones, and medium-sized iPads. David Naranjo, associate director for technology market analysis firm Counterpoint Research, commented on the significance of Apple's entry into the OLED notebook market, noting, "Asus, Lenovo, HP, and Dell have already helped bring OLED screens to premium notebooks, but Apple’s entry could be a turning point." He further suggested that Apple's supply chain expertise could be a significant advantage, stating, "Not unlike smartphones, when Apple adopts OLED, it boosts manufacturing capacity, improves yields, and lowers panel costs, making OLED more affordable for a wider range of products." This announcement comes after a series of product launches from Apple, including the iPhone Duo, HomeView, updated iMacs, and updated iPads.
