QatarEnergy has finalized a significant 20-year agreement to purchase up to three million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from Australian energy company Woodside. This deal involves supplies from Woodside’s Louisiana LNG project, currently under construction near Lake Charles, Louisiana, with production anticipated to commence in 2029.
The initial phase of the Louisiana project will feature three production units, or trains, designed for a combined annual capacity of 16.5 million tonnes of LNG. Deliveries to QatarEnergy are scheduled to begin once the project's second train becomes operational, escalating to three million tonnes per year upon the commencement of the third train's production. The terms of the agreement stipulate that LNG will be supplied on a free-on-board (FOB) basis, meaning Woodside will manage the loading of LNG onto vessels at the export terminal, while QatarEnergy will assume responsibility for its subsequent shipping.
Woodside CEO and Managing Director Liz Westcott highlighted the agreement as a crucial milestone in securing long-term customers for the Louisiana project. "This landmark agreement brings together Woodside’s competitive U.S. LNG project with QatarEnergy as a customer, one of the world’s leading energy companies," Westcott stated.
This latest agreement follows two similar long-term deals QatarEnergy inked with U.S. energy company Cheniere on October 22. These prior agreements involve the purchase of up to four million tonnes of LNG annually from Cheniere's Sabine Pass facility in Louisiana and its Corpus Christi facility in Texas, with deliveries expected between 2031 and 2054. Collectively, these arrangements enhance QatarEnergy's long-term LNG supply portfolio with U.S. producers, including the Woodside deal which will source from a project slated to begin production in 2029.
