A devastating incident occurred on October 29, 2026, when a helicopter belonging to the Italian contingent of EUFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina crashed in the Brcko District. The crash resulted in the deaths of four individuals associated with the European Union Force in Bosnia (EUFOR). The CH-47 Chinook helicopter was engaged in "routine training" when it went down in the Brcko region, approximately 180km north of Sarajevo, Bosnia’s capital.
In addition to the fatalities, 11 people sustained injuries in the crash. EUFOR confirmed that all injured individuals are receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. The Italian government issued a statement confirming that all individuals on board the military helicopter were Italian nationals. The victims have been identified by the Italian defence ministry as two soldiers and two Red Cross volunteers.
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto expressed his deep sorrow, stating, "At this moment of immense grief, my thoughts go first and foremost to the families of our fallen, to whom I extend my personal condolences and those of the entire defence establishment."
Images of the wreckage, showing the helicopter overturned on a flat field, were published by Bosnian media outlets. A spokesperson for Brcko hospital informed AFP news agency that 15 people were on board at the time of the crash. Initially, three fatalities were confirmed at the scene, with a fourth person succumbing to their injuries later at the hospital. Twelve individuals were transported to the hospital.
EUFOR has announced that a "full and thorough investigation of the incident" is underway, and further information will be released as it is verified and deemed appropriate. EUFOR, a force comprising between 1,000 and 1,500 personnel, has been operational in Bosnia since 2004, succeeding a NATO peacekeeping force. The mission's mandate includes overseeing the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which brought an end to the Bosnian War in 1995.
