Five individuals, including four children, have tragically lost their lives as torrential rains and flash floods swept through northern and eastern Syria. The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management confirmed that the children drowned in two separate incidents in rural Raqqa province, while another child perished in Deir Ezzor. An adult also died in Raqqa due to the severe flooding.
Civil Defence teams have been actively engaged in rescue operations, saving 25 people who were trapped by rising floodwaters or stranded in their vehicles. However, five individuals remain unaccounted for following the flash floods that began impacting northern and eastern regions of the country on Wednesday.
The extreme weather conditions also led to the collapse of a bridge in Raqqa, severing a crucial road link to neighboring Aleppo, as reported by the state news agency Sana. Disturbing footage shared online depicted a military helicopter in Deir Ezzor rescuing individuals from a submerged vehicle.
In response to the crisis, the ministry reported that 375 families were evacuated from flooded displacement camps in rural Raqqa. Syria's already fragile infrastructure, severely damaged by the civil war that commenced in 2011, is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of heavy winter rainfall. The ongoing effects of the conflict exacerbate the country's susceptibility to such natural disasters. Many Syrians continue to live as displaced persons despite the war's conclusion in December 2024, following the rebels' overthrow of former president Bashar Al Assad's regime. The current government, under President Ahmad Al Shara, is striving to rebuild and has expressed openness to foreign investment.
