The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has announced the successful interception of a drone launched by the Houthis with the apparent intention of targeting Saudi Arabia’s Mecca region. The coalition spokesman, Turki al-Malki, confirmed via social media on Friday morning that the drone was "intercepted and destroyed." This incident follows earlier reports of a missile targeting western Saudi Arabia also being brought down, as hostilities between the Riyadh-backed Yemen government and the Iran-backed Houthis continue to intensify.

A Houthi spokesperson has denied any targeting of the Muslim holy city or its surrounding areas. The spokesperson reiterated that the group's cross-border operations are strictly focused on Saudi energy and military infrastructure, stating, "Our operations target [Saudi] oil facilities and military bases, and there is no longer anyone in this world who believes these fabrications and lies propagated by the criminal Al Saud regime." The Saudi-led coalition has, in the past, accused the Houthis of launching drones towards Islam’s two holiest cities: Mecca and Medina.

Despite the denials, attacks have persisted without any indication of slowing. Humanitarian agencies have expressed concerns over the deteriorating conditions for civilians caught in the conflict. On Thursday, the Saudi-led coalition reported destroying a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis towards the kingdom’s eastern region. Subsequently, two more ballistic missiles launched toward the Saudi capital, Riyadh, were also intercepted and destroyed. Al-Malki further stated on Friday that the coalition's air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed a Houthi cruise missile that had been aimed at western Saudi Arabia.
