Australian great Mike Hussey could find himself plotting against his home country after revealing he is open to an approach from England to become their Test batting coach. England are set to host Australia in the Ashes across June, July, and August next year as they seek to reclaim the urn for the first time since 2015.
Hussey received an informal inquiry from England’s new red-ball coach Stephen Fleming, with whom he spent 15 years as both a teammate and a coach at Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings. Speaking to Fox Sports, where he works as a commentator, Hussey explained that the conversation began as a casual remark about potentially taking on the batting coach role.
Known by the nickname “Mr Cricket” due to his extensive technical expertise, Hussey recently returned home following a coaching stint with Welsh Fire in The Hundred. He noted that he has not yet given the proposition serious thought. Although he admitted that joining England would feel unusual—having previously assisted them during the 2022 T20 World Cup—he emphasized his passion for coaching and working with different players.
Fleming took over as red-ball coach in late July following the departure of Brendon McCullum, who continues to manage England’s white-ball squads.
