In a moment of pure emotion, Mercedes' Italian driver Kimi Antonelli secured his maiden Formula One World Championship title at the Mexico City Grand Prix, held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. At just 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli became the youngest world champion in Formula One history with his third-place finish. The first Italian to achieve this feat since 1953, Antonelli was overcome with joy, his sobs audible over the team radio as he crossed the finish line.

While Red Bull's Max Verstappen claimed victory in the race, which was interrupted by red flags and restarts, Antonelli's consistent performance ensured his overall lead reached an insurmountable 119 points. The race itself was a spectacle of drama, featuring two safety car periods, multiple collisions, and a lengthy 33-minute halt with 25 laps remaining. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, starting from pole position, secured a hard-fought second place after an intense battle with his teammate Charles Leclerc.

Antonelli's race engineer, Peter Bonnington, congratulated him over the radio, saying, "Get in there, Kimi. Champion of the world." A visibly emotional Antonelli responded, "We did it thank you so much." He was greeted by his parents and sister upon exiting the car, followed by a jubilant mobbing from his pit crew. The previous record for the youngest champion was held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first title in 2010.

"I’m speechless. I’m trying to process what has just happened," Antonelli shared with the crowd. "It’s been an incredible season, and to share this podium with Max and Lewis is truly incredible. And looking forward to some more battles in the future. This weekend I did feel a bit more tense, but I’m just so happy that we got it done, and now we can enjoy the rest of the season." He celebrated on the podium with an Italian flag and champagne.

Antonelli admitted to being emotional on the final lap, stating, "On the last lap, I just backed off because I just couldn’t see the track. I was getting emotional. So it was just good to bring it home."

In the drivers' standings, Verstappen moved into second place, with Hamilton third. George Russell, who had an outside chance of contention, dropped to fourth, 130 points behind the new champion. Mercedes leads the constructors' standings by a significant margin over Ferrari, and could secure that title in Brazil.

The race was marred by a significant incident on lap 46 when Valtteri Bottas experienced a high-speed suspension failure, leading to a crash into the barriers. Bottas received medical attention but was able to walk to an ambulance, giving a thumbs-up. The race resumed with Verstappen leading, challenged by Hamilton, and Antonelli making a crucial pass on Leclerc. Another safety car was deployed following a collision between Lindblad and Piastri, setting up a tense final nine laps.

Earlier in the race, Hamilton, starting from pole for Ferrari for the first time, battled with Leclerc. Leclerc received a five-second penalty for cutting a corner during their duel. Russell had a poor start and incurred a 10-second penalty after colliding with Hadjar.
