Abu Dhabi is set to host the penultimate stage of the DP World Tour this week, with the Race to Dubai championship reaching a critical juncture. A three-way tie for the lead is anticipated, and Rory McIlroy remains a strong contender for the title.

When is it? The Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship will take place from November 5-8. McIlroy has already confirmed his participation in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

Where is it? The tournament is being held at Yas Links, situated on the western shores of Yas Island. This Kyle Phillips-designed 18-hole, par-72 links course is recognized among Golf Digest's world top 100 courses.

Who is playing? The event boasts a stellar lineup, featuring McIlroy, the current Race to Dubai leader Eugenio Chacarra, and 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed. Defending champion Aaron Rai, along with former Abu Dhabi winners Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton, will also compete. The field comprises the top 70 available players in the Race to Dubai rankings. However, notable players such as Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, and Matt Fitzpatrick will not be participating this year. Following this event, the field will be reduced to the top 50 for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates, scheduled from November 12 to 15.

Who is in the hunt for the Race to Dubai? McIlroy currently holds third place in the Race to Dubai standings with 3,144.9 points. He trails leader Chacarra (4,143.9 points) and Reed (3,474.6 points).

What does McIlroy need to do? McIlroy is aiming to secure his fifth consecutive Race to Dubai victory, which would also be his record-equalling eighth title, drawing him level with Colin Montgomerie. A win in Abu Dhabi offers 1,500 points, while the Dubai championship winner will receive 2,000 points. Chacarra enters the DP World Tour Play-Offs with a 669-point lead over Reed and a 999-point cushion over McIlroy. With 3,500 points still up for grabs across both remaining events, the Race to Dubai remains highly competitive.

McIlroy has finished as runner-up four times previously in Abu Dhabi. A victory at Yas Links, coupled with Chacarra finishing third or lower, would position McIlroy strongly for the DP World Tour Championship, potentially turning it into a direct contest between the two. Reed also has a chance to overtake Chacarra if he wins and the Spaniard finishes third or lower. Reed would become only the second American to win the Race to Dubai crown, following Collin Morikawa in 2021. While a win in Abu Dhabi would give Chacarra a significant advantage, it would not guarantee him the overall title, as 2,000 points are still available in Dubai.

Prize Money The winner at Yas Links will receive $1.53 million from a total prize fund of $9 million.
