Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca insists he can replicate the success achieved under Pep Guardiola if given the necessary time to navigate significant changes at the club. Maresca is set to take charge of his inaugural Premier League fixture as City manager when Bournemouth visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
The Italian coach was appointed to succeed Guardiola following the legendary manager's resignation at the conclusion of last season. Guardiola secured 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles, across a stellar decade at the Etihad Stadium. Stepping into this role is a formidable challenge for the former Chelsea boss, who arrives during a period of considerable transition both on and off the pitch. Key players such as Rodri, John Stones, and Bernardo Silva have departed, while Savinho is reportedly nearing a move to Tottenham.
Manchester City have not claimed the league title since 2024 and finished seven points adrift of champions Arsenal last campaign. Arsenal further emphasized the scale of the challenge awaiting Maresca by defeating City 3-0 in the Community Shield last weekend.
“When you make many changes, not only the manager, Rodri was here, John was here, Bernardo was here. It’s a big change, but it doesn’t mean that won’t be ready to compete,” Maresca told reporters on Friday. “It’s a context; it’s not an excuse. We need to be ready; I want to compete. The reason I’m here is because I want to try and win titles, and carry on what this club stands for in the last 15 years.”
Maresca acknowledged that immediate pressure will mount if City fail to secure a strong start to the season. He is currently forced to rebuild the squad dynamically, with ongoing speculation surrounding Savinho and Omar Marmoush linked to Tottenham. Additional uncertainty surrounds midfielder Nico Gonzalez, alongside reported links to Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, and Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister.
Regarding player departures, Maresca noted, “It’s quite clear when players want to leave, for any reason, then it’s complicated to convince them to stay or change their thoughts. It happened with Rodri, the same thing is happening with Savinho, since day one, he asked me that he wants to leave. So, now we are waiting.”
Maresca also addressed the situation regarding Egypt forward Omar Marmoush and potential interest in Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, emphasizing his focus on the remaining days of the transfer window and working alongside the club's sporting director.
