Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his intention to retire from the Portugal national team, marking the end of one of football's most celebrated international careers. In a social media post on Thursday, the 41-year-old stated he would be "handing back the number 7 shirt" following the November international break.
Ronaldo, who captained Portugal to their historic first major trophy at Euro 2016 and was instrumental in their 2019 and 2025 Nations League victories, described the decision as deeply emotional. "It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart," Ronaldo shared. He added, "If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it."
He expressed gratitude to his family, the Portuguese people, and all the teammates, coaches, and staff he has worked with throughout his 23-year tenure with the national team. "Portugal will always be a part of me," he captioned the announcement video.
Throughout his international career, Ronaldo has amassed 234 appearances for Portugal, scoring a remarkable 146 goals, holding the all-time records for both international appearances and goals. The announcement follows a recent incident where Ronaldo reportedly fell out with national coach Jorge Jesus after refusing to be used in a Nations League match, leading to his immediate departure from the team camp.
