A remarkable encounter with a colossal whale near Umm Qamar Island, north of Hurghada, has ignited a lively debate among marine professionals and enthusiasts. Divers and sailors have widely shared videos and photographs capturing the immense creature during a recent tourist excursion. Initial speculation points towards the whale being either a fin whale, known locally as “al-Battan,” or possibly a blue whale. However, the General Administration of Red Sea Protected Areas has stated that there is no official, documented record of this incident.

Eyewitnesses remain firm in their assertion of spotting a giant whale in the vicinity, while authorities maintain a cautious stance due to the absence of verified information. This discrepancy raises questions about whether one of the ocean's largest inhabitants truly appeared in the Red Sea and if the circulating footage is sufficient for scientific species identification.

An Incredible Sighting

Mahmoud Shazly, a boat captain in Hurghada and the individual who filmed one of the widely circulated videos, provided further details about the event. He recounted that while guiding four German tourists on a snorkeling trip in the al-Erq area, a massive whale unexpectedly emerged near Umm Qamar Island. The encounter occurred around 2:00 PM, leaving the tourists astonished and eager to document the moment with photos and videos.

Several individuals involved in marine activities have suggested, based on the whale's size and appearance in the video, that it could be a blue whale or a fin whale. Nevertheless, a definitive identification would necessitate expert analysis of the visual evidence. In contrast, the General Administration of Red Sea Protected Areas has denied any official confirmation or documented information verifying the whale's presence, noting that no formal reports of a blue or fin whale sighting in the area have been received. The administration also mentioned that attempts to contact the videographer were unsuccessful in establishing the footage's location or timing. They stressed the importance of caution and accuracy, advising against drawing firm conclusions about the marine creature's species before scientific verification of the recorded material.

Second-Largest Animal on Earth

The fin whale, locally referred to as “al-Battan,” holds the distinction of being the second-largest animal on Earth, with only the blue whale being larger. As members of the baleen whale family, they possess specialized plates in their mouths for filtering food from water and periodically surface to breathe. The Red Sea waters have a history of sightings of various whale species, most notably humpback whales in the regions of Marsa Alam and Al-Qusair.
