Palestinian journalist Abed Abou Shhadeh has been released by Israeli authorities after being detained for five days without charge. Abou Shhadeh was held at a Shin Bet intelligence facility in Petah Tikva, located on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. Upon his release on Sunday, Abou Shhadeh stated that his detention was part of "political measures" aimed at intimidating not only him but also "Arab society as a whole." He expressed his intention to continue his journalistic work, emphasizing the importance of reaffirming their commitment to truth.

His detention began on Tuesday, reportedly on suspicion of "contact with a foreign agent." According to the legal rights group Adalah, which is part of his defense team, the suspicion stemmed from receiving money from foreign sources to support Israel's Arab voters. This accusation followed Abou Shhadeh's appearances on the al-Midan podcast for the Arab48 website and as an analyst on Al Jazeera, where he discussed topics similar to those covered in Israeli media, as noted by his legal counsel, Hadeel Abu Salih, a human rights lawyer with Adalah.

Abu Salih asserted that the police lacked evidence from the outset, with suspicions based on a public conversation Abou Shhadeh had with Palestinian intellectual Azmi Bishara while Bishara was in Qatar. She argued that such discussions are being criminalized solely because the speakers are Palestinians or when they analyze their political reality, turning analysis into criminal suspicion within the Israeli system. Abu Salih also mentioned that authorities attempted to portray Abou Shhadeh as a political counsel rather than a journalist.

The lawyer detailed that Abou Shhadeh's arrest involved 15 Israeli security officers raiding his home in Jaffa in the middle of the night, confiscating electronic devices and books in front of his two children.

Hassan Jabareen, founder of Adalah, told Al Jazeera that the five-day detention was "part of the campaign against the votes of the Arabs and Palestinians in Israel," aiming to delegitimize their votes. Jabareen added that Abou Shhadeh traveled to Doha and returned as a journalist but was arrested as a political figure, suggesting an attempt to imply that Arabs use illegal means in their political participation in Israeli elections.
