US President Donald Trump has reignited speculation about UFC President Dana White potentially taking on the role of White House press secretary. Trump initially floated the idea on Truth Social on Saturday and further fueled the discussion on Sunday with a cartoon depicting White leading a White House press briefing. In the animation, White is shown telling journalists, 'Trump made me press secretary and I brought help,' while standing at a podium flanked by fighters like Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev.
The cartoon, which features reporters being physically removed from the room, is likely to court controversy, given the Trump administration's often contentious relationship with many US media outlets and reporters. Despite White's long-standing support and donations to Trump, it remains highly improbable that he would accept the press secretary position if the offer were serious.
This speculation follows a significant event in June when the UFC organized the first professional sporting event on the White House's South Lawn. That event was notably marred by controversial remarks from one of the athletes concerning former first lady Michelle Obama. White later distanced himself from those comments.
According to NBC, White confirmed on Saturday night that he was scheduled to fly to Washington on Monday for a meeting with President Trump. 'We have a meeting on Monday, so sure, I’ll have more to talk about after that,' White reportedly told media outlets in London. Earlier on Saturday, White had also shared a photo on Instagram Stories from behind the White House press room podium.
The position of White House press secretary has been a subject of recent speculation and controversy. Following the departure of Karoline Leavitt, President Trump's appointment of Katie Zacharia to the role was widely seen as problematic. Reporters and analysts noted Ms. Zacharia's apparent lack of preparedness and awareness during her initial briefing, where she took few questions. After what many described as a disastrous interview on Fox News, Ms. Zacharia resigned after just five days, leaving the role vacant.
