Hull City and Ipswich Town, both newly promoted from the English second tier, secured headline-grabbing victories on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
In Saturday's early game, Hull powered to an impressive win over Manchester United, who were looking to start the new campaign with a bang after last season's third-place finish and UEFA Champions League qualification. Michael Carrick's side looked well off the pace from the start against Hull—who won the Championship play-off final against Middlesbrough in May to seal promotion—with the home side sealing all three points thanks to first-half goals from defensive duo Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy at MKM Stadium.
“It's just one game, we're disappointed we haven't won,” Carrick insisted. “It's not more than that, it's not less than that. We've got to soak it up and come back stronger.”
The Tigers' 2-0 victory was their first-ever top-flight win against United in their first Premier League game since 2017.
Elsewhere, Ipswich Town, who finished runners-up in the Championship last season to seal their place back in the top flight, were also savouring victory on Saturday night after beating Sunderland 2-1. Substitute Jack Clarke scored a 90th-minute winner against his former club to earn the Tractor Boys all three points at Portman Road against a team that finished seventh last time out and qualified for the Europa League.
Everton won their Premier League opener for the first time in five years after beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with goals from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry. Meanwhile, Oliver Glasner saw his reign as Nottingham Forest manager start with a defeat as Anton Stach's free-kick earned Leeds United victory two minutes from time at the City Ground.
