Lando Norris claimed his second consecutive victory after triumphing in a dramatic and unpredictable Dutch Grand Prix. Starting from pole position following a stellar qualifying performance, the McLaren driver crossed the finish line 11 seconds ahead of title-race leader Kimi Antonelli, with Mercedes teammate George Russell rounding out the podium in third place.
Max Verstappen saw his hopes of a home victory at Zandvoort dashed early on after suffering a high-speed crash on the opening lap, which triggered a red flag. At the race restart, Antonelli seized the lead from Norris, but the reigning Formula One champion fought back tenaciously to reclaim the front and secure the chequered flag.
“A tough race,” Norris reflected. “Yesterday I said we needed to put on a bit of a show for everyone for the final race here. I made it tough for myself today but a good race, well fought. Probably one of my better wins, we had to fight for it. The pace was very strong and we managed things well. Over the moon, very happy. Nice to win the final race in Zandvoort.”
Antonelli was aided by teammate George Russell, who complied with team orders to let the Italian driver past on fresher tyres as Antonelli extended his championship lead to 59 points. Meanwhile, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton found themselves tied in second place with 183 points each following a fourth-place finish for the Ferrari driver. Charles Leclerc finished fifth for his team, Oscar Piastri took sixth, and Liam Lawson secured seventh for Red Bull while standing in for the injured Isack Hadjar.
Sunday's result maintained the historical trend that every F1 race at Zandvoort since the circuit's return in 2021—following a 36-year absence—has been won from pole, marking the final event there for the foreseeable future.
“It was a very intense race, I managed to get the lead, then I just didn't have the feeling with the car,” Antonelli admitted. “It was sliding a lot, Lando passed me and I knew I had no chance after that. George was a great team player, happy for him to hold on to P3 as well.”
Addressing whether he could mount a title challenge against Antonelli, Norris remained grounded: “It sounds boring but one race at a time. There's no point thinking that far ahead, I need to concentrate on having a nice little break. Two great weekends but we need to reset and learn as much as we can.”
Helped by a late virtual safety car called to clear track debris, George Russell successfully held off Lewis Hamilton to secure the final podium position.
“These two [Norris and Antonelli] were very quick at the beginning and Lando was just exceptionally fast towards the end of the race so it was tough to hold on in those old tyres,” Russell said. “I'm happy to be standing here on the podium because it could have gone either way … It's been a strong weekend overall so I'll take the positives.”
