Spanish champions Barcelona cruised to a 5-0 victory over Elche in their La Liga opener, powered by two goals each from Raphinha and Fermin Lopez alongside two debut assists by Anthony Gordon.

Following Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Espanyol under Jose Mourinho on Saturday, Barcelona delivered a resounding statement that they intend to fiercely defend their league title. Karim Adeyemi also scored on his debut as the visitors dismantled Elche at Martinez Valero Stadium.

Hansi Flick rested several regular starters who are still regaining full fitness after the World Cup. Teenage winger Lamine Yamal started on the right flank despite a subdued performance following his success with Spain.

Raphinha opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute after being fouled inside the box by Victor Chust. While Eric Garcia anchored the defense and Gavi drew attention with a pink haircut celebrating Spain's triumph, Adeyemi settled into the match to double the lead before halftime following an unselfish assist from Raphinha.

After the break, substitute Anthony Gordon made an immediate impact by setting up Raphinha's second goal and later providing the assist for Fermin Lopez to make it 4-0. Youngster Xavi Espart then created the opportunity for Lopez to net his second and seal the emphatic 5-0 win.

Despite occasional vulnerabilities in Hansi Flick's high defensive line, goalkeeper Joan Garcia secured a clean sheet. Raphinha remarked after the match that the ease of the victory ultimately depended on the team maintaining their maximum performance level.
