South African police have confirmed the arrest of four individuals in connection with the tragic murder of two-time boxing world champion Zolani Tete, who was fatally shot last week.

According to a police statement released on Monday, the four suspects, aged between 22 and 28, were taken into custody over the weekend, with one formally charged for murder.

Tete, 38, was ambushed on Friday evening while returning to his residence in Mdantsane, located in the Eastern Cape province. A 27-year-old female passenger in the vehicle survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital, police reported.

Throughout his career, Tete achieved significant success, capturing the IBF junior bantamweight world title in 2014 and the WBO bantamweight world title in 2017. He etched his name into boxing history in 2017 by securing the fastest knockout victory in a world championship bout, flattening his opponent in just 11 seconds with his opening punch to retain his WBO bantamweight crown.

After serving a four-year ban imposed by the United Kingdom Anti-Doping agency in 2023, which concluded on July 29, Tete was actively preparing for a comeback to professional boxing.

Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie stated, “South Africa has lost one of the finest fighters it has ever produced. He was training for a return to the ring. He believed he still had something to give this country. He was right, but he will not get the chance now. He, and all of us, have been robbed.”
