Czech pair Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik captured their first Grand Slam trophy as a team by defeating Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic and Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 in the US Open mixed doubles final.
Playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday, Muchova and Mensik started strong, with the hard-serving Mensik firing an ace past Bencic to secure the first set in under 30 minutes. Bencic responded in the second set, hitting a return winner for a 3-1 lead and eventually leveling the match when her forehand clipped the net cord and bypassed Muchova.
During the deciding 10-point match tiebreak, Mensik's powerful serve and decisive net play enabled the Czech duo to take command. The 20-year-old executed a firm volley to build an 8-4 lead, and Muchova followed with a strong serve to set up championship points. Mensik then clinched the victory and the season's final Grand Slam opening trophy with another ace.
To reach the title match, Muchova and Mensik had previously overcome two match points against Russians Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev in the semifinals.
“I think in the end the matching outfits made the difference for us,” Muchova remarked during the trophy ceremony. “I wasn’t really expecting to be standing here tonight. We came out just to have fun and enjoy these mixed doubles and now we are standing here. So we did something right.”
She added, “I think this is a really good start to the US Open for all of us,” before congratulating Bencic and Cobolli.
The 16-team mixed doubles tournament began on Tuesday, marking the second year of a revamped format designed to feature top singles players and attract larger crowds prior to the singles main draw. The star-studded event also featured pairings such as Novak Djokovic with Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz alongside Serena Williams.
