The owners of the National Football League (NFL) have unanimously approved the sale of the Seattle Seahawks for a league-record $9.6bn to a family-led group headed by Vinod Khosla. The agreement, initially announced on July 11, received official ratification during a special meeting of owners in Atlanta on Wednesday, fulfilling the wishes of the late team owner, Paul Allen. The approval required at least 24 votes from the 32 owners, a result anticipated after the NFL’s finance and ownership policy committees recommended it unanimously.
“How often do you get to buy a franchise that just won the Super Bowl?” remarked Vinod Khosla alongside his wife Neeru and son Neal. Outlining their strategy, he stated that the priority is maintaining the winning momentum with a long-term approach.
The estate of Paul G. Allen, which inherited the franchise following Allen's passing in 2018, selected the Khosla family after a comprehensive search. Allen's will mandated the team's sale to distribute assets to charitable causes. This $9.6bn transaction sets a new benchmark for NFL franchise sales and stands as the second-highest valuation in North American sports history, following the Los Angeles Lakers and surpassing the Washington Commanders' $6bn sale in 2023.
Paul Allen originally purchased the Seahawks for $194 million in 1997 from Ken Behring, keeping the franchise in Seattle. As a co-founder of Microsoft, Allen also held ownership of the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, with his sister Jody Allen overseeing duties for the estate.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell praised the choice, highlighting the family's prior involvement with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West. Vinod Khosla, a 71-year-old venture capitalist and founder of Khosla Ventures, will relinquish his 3.1 percent stake in the 49ers to finalize the Seahawks acquisition ahead of the season opener against the New England Patriots. Neeru Khosla will serve as the controlling owner, while their son Neal is set to take on a prominent organizational role.
