Tadej Pogacar has suffered a concussion and is facing surgery on a broken collarbone following a high-speed crash that abruptly ended his Vuelta a Espana challenge on Saturday.
The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider's ambitious bid to complete cycling's Grand Tour hat-trick came to a painful halt when the race leader and five-time Tour de France winner crashed out, leaving him with blood on his face and a severe shoulder injury.
The incident occurred as Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar, who had maintained the red jersey since claiming victory in the opening stage, went down within the peloton with over 30 kilometres remaining on the route from Pucol to Xeraco. Television replays indicated the 27-year-old swerved to his right, colliding with another rider before hitting the pavement. Subsequent riders coming from behind also piled into the collision. Broadcast footage suggested he might have struck an obstacle on the road surface.
Although he initially attempted to rise and rejoin his bicycle while teammates gathered around, he quickly sat back down as medical personnel rushed to his aid. He was eventually escorted to an ambulance with his arm supported in a sling, and UAE Team Emirates-XRG subsequently confirmed that surgical intervention would be necessary.
“Unfortunately, Tadej suffered a heavy crash during today’s stage and was unable to continue the race,” Dr Adrian Rotunno, Medical Director for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, stated. “He is stable, and following a thorough medical assessment at hospital, Tadej has been diagnosed with a concussion, displaced left clavicle fracture, a stable C7 cervical fracture, and multiple abrasions. Fortunately, no other major injuries and no neurological fallout. He will require clavicle surgery which will be delayed due to concussion precautions. Tadej remains under the care of our medical team and we’ll provide further updates following the surgery.”
Having secured his fifth Tour de France title last month alongside his 2024 Giro d'Italia victory, Tadej Pogacar had set his sights on achieving his first overall triumph at the Vuelta a Espana, which would have positioned him as only the ninth rider in history to conquer all three of cycling's Grand Tours.
UAE team manager Joxean Fernandez Matxin emphasised the importance of offering personal support to the rider during this difficult period. “Now we stay with Tadej the person, his personal situation is bad so we need to stay with him. And we'll continue in the race,” he remarked. “At the time, I couldn't talk to him, obviously, about what actually happened. But these are situations that sometimes happen in cycling. Now in any case, we have to be with Tadej the person, not with Tadej Pogacar the cyclist, or Tadej Pogacar the champion or Tadej Pogacar the leader of the Vuelta. We need to be with him more in the bad moments than we do in the good ones.”
Prior to the crash, Tadej Pogacar held a commanding lead of three minutes and 50 seconds over Enric Mas. Following the stage, Enric Mas assumed the red jersey, making him the first Spanish rider to lead the Vuelta since Jesus Herrada in 2018. Meanwhile, Primoz Roglic climbed to second place in the standings, trailing Enric Mas by a minute.
The stage win ultimately went to Frenchman Bryan Coquard after a separate multi-rider crash occurred within the final kilometre. Mads Pedersen claimed second place, with Jordi Meeus taking third. During the podium ceremony, a subdued Enric Mas accepted the red jersey without wearing it, opting instead to hold it before him.
“It’s a real shame,” Enric Mas stated regarding the incident. “I hope he gets better quickly. We've still got a few races left and I hope he'll be in good shape for them.”
Teammates who had initially stopped to assist Tadej Pogacar eventually crossed the finish line nearly 12 minutes after the main peloton.
