Defending men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz made a triumphant return from a four-month wrist injury absence, securing a straight-sets first-round victory at the US Open. Playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Alcaraz defeated Russian Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, marking his first singles match in 139 days. Women’s defending champion Aryna Sabalenka also advanced safely into the second round on Monday.
“It’s been a really tough five months for me,” said Alcaraz, the world number three. “Being able to step on the Arthur Ashe, being able to compete again, I couldn’t decide to come back in a better tournament. It’s a really special place for me.”
Alcaraz is pursuing another major title following his Australian Open triumph in January. Meanwhile, women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka overcame 23 unforced errors with 32 winners to secure a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Camila Osorio. In other tournament action, Japan’s Naomi Osaka battled past Anastasia Zakharova, Poland’s Iga Swiatek defeated Wang Xiyu, and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas overcame Frenchman Arthur Fils.
