Professional sumo wrestling is arriving in the UAE for the very first time as athletes prepare for the All-Star Sumo Competition in Abu Dhabi later this month.

Hosted by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the landmark event will be held at the Space42 Arena on September 26, marking the country's first-ever international professional sumo tournament.

A total of nine elite 'rikishi' hailing from Japan, Mongolia, and Egypt will face off across 36 thrilling bouts. The competitor lineup features athletes boasting world championship titles, prestigious Emperor’s Cup honours, and decades of professional experience.

Attendees will witness more than just athletic competition; the event will showcase authentic elements of sumo's centuries-old heritage, including a formal ring-entering procession and traditional pre-bout rituals.

“Bringing professional sumo to the UAE for the first time is an exciting addition to Abu Dhabi’s sporting calendar and an opportunity to introduce audiences to a sport with a rich history and deeply rooted traditions,” stated Mohamad Yehya, general manager of Space42. “The event will give fans a unique opportunity to experience sumo up close and discover the traditions and atmosphere that make the sport so distinctive.”

Japan's Ichi leads the star-studded field as an Emperor’s Cup winner—the highest accolade in Japanese professional sumo—alongside fellow compatriot Hiroki.

The roster also highlights the global expansion of the sport. Mendee of Mongolia enters the competition as a junior world champion, while Ramy El-Gazar of Egypt brings international champion credentials, offering regional fans a local connection to the global event.

Spectators will be treated to a rare regional showcase of sumo traditions, from the ceremonial ring entrance and bout preparations to the deep respect observed around the dohyo.

Tracing its origins back more than 1,500 years, sumo began in Japan as an ancient agricultural and religious ritual.
