Former South Africa captain Bob Skinstad has strongly defended controversial Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus, emphasizing that he is adored by fans at home for his innovative tactics. Erasmus has achieved unprecedented success since taking charge of South African rugby in 2017, including winning a home series against the British & Irish Lions in 2021 as he now prepares to target a hat-trick of World Cup titles in Australia next year.

Despite this success, his methods have frequently sparked controversy. The British & Irish Lions series was overshadowed by a leaked video of him analyzing Test-match officiating, while this week he faced accusations of sharp practice after altering his named starting XV multiple times ahead of the second Test against New Zealand. Former New Zealand coach Steve Hansen labeled the frequent changes, which included a late alteration to the entire front row, a "debacle."

Nevertheless, the Boks triumphed in Cape Town to level the series at 1-1, with the third game scheduled in Johannesburg and the final match set for Baltimore. Speaking ahead of the Dubai Sevens Long Lunch in Festival City, Skinstad argued that Erasmus is beloved for his relentless drive to innovate.

“He has been a breath of fresh air,” Skinstad stated. He praised the coach for shielding his players from media frenzies and pioneering analytical approaches to gameplay, squad rotation, and tactical innovations like the ‘bomb squad’ bench strategy. “When you’re making decisions that have led World Rugby to adapt their laws, then you’re innovating. Because of that innovation, I think at home in South Africa, they’re absolutely adoring [him].”

Comparing Erasmus to the traditional South African ingenuity of a farmer who “always makes a plan,” Skinstad noted that fans take great pride in this resourcefulness. Furthermore, Skinstad highlighted Erasmus’s exceptionally high standards for his coaching staff, which drive excellence throughout the working environment without relying on oppressive tactics.
