Alpine's French driver Pierre Gasly secured a remarkable career-first pole position at the Italian GP on Saturday. Gasly clinched the top spot ahead of Mercedes' George Russell with a final effort and a lap time of one minute and 21.786 seconds, edging the Briton by 0.060 seconds.
Gasly showed strong pace throughout the earlier sessions, leading Q1 and finishing fourth fastest in Q2 before completing the final flying lap as the last of the contenders. "It's been nine years trying to chase the opportunity to get a pole," Gasly remarked. "I won my first race in Monza and got my first pole at this track. It's something special around here."
Behind the front row, McLaren's Oscar Piastri qualified third to share the second row with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton narrowly advanced into the final phase by just 0.001 of a second to take fifth place on the grid, placing one position ahead of Red Bull rival Max Verstappen, the winner of last year's race.
Mercedes's championship leader Kimi Antonelli, holding a 59-point lead over George Russell and Hamilton, qualified in seventh place but will drop to the back of the grid due to engine penalties. Russell praised Gasly's incredible performance, noting their interaction before the session and acknowledging the impressive speed shown by Gasly and Alpine.
With this achievement, Gasly becomes the first French driver to claim pole position since Jean Alesi did so for Benetton at the same venue in 1997. Meanwhile, Russell faces a prime opportunity to narrow the gap in the standings against teammate Antonelli following the latter's 30-place grid penalty.
