Manchester City continued their winning start to the season and climbed to the top of the Premier League, though Erling Haaland’s lone goal against newly promoted Coventry City exposed some nervous moments at the Etihad Stadium.

The Enzo Maresca era has begun with three straight Premier League victories, but Saturday's performance was far from flawless. The hosts required two crucial late saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma to prevent Coventry from securing their first top-flight point in 25 years.

Haaland’s header midway through the first half proved to be the match-winner, marking his third goal in as many games this season. Maresca was able to deploy summer signings Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye following a record-breaking transfer window outlay of £460 million ($622m) to revitalize the squad after Pep Guardiola’s decade in charge.

Fernandez was initially slated for the bench after completing a £125 million transfer from Chelsea, matching the Premier League record. However, an injury to Nico O'Reilly during the warm-up forced the Argentine directly into the starting lineup. Ndiaye also made his City debut alongside Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, and Rayan Cherki.

Coventry had entered the match without a goal in three consecutive defeats following their return to the top flight after a 25-year absence. Frank Lampard’s side came agonizingly close to scoring early when Donnarumma miscontrolled a backpass before scrambling to clear it off the line.

Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni also squandered significant opportunities to put the visitors ahead before Manchester City found their rhythm. Cherki hit the post, and Fernandez played a key role in the opening goal by feeding Semenyo on the right, whose precise cross allowed Haaland to head home at the back post.

Although Haaland was denied a second goal by Carl Rushworth before halftime, Manchester City failed to extend their lead and had to fight hard to secure the three points. Donnarumma delivered two exceptional saves late in the game to deny Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms.

Despite the loss, Frank Lampard found plenty of encouragement in Coventry's ability to compete at the highest level. Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca knows an improved performance will be necessary when Manchester City visit local rivals Manchester United next weekend.
